Competitive napping is a sport in which athletes compete to fall asleep quickly, sleep well and wake on time, within a fixed period and under observation. Performances are measured by polysomnography and scored by panels of judges against criteria set by the sport's governing body, the International Federation of Competitive Napping (IFCN; Fédération Internationale de la Sieste Compétitive).

The sport's rules were first codified in 1983 by members of a Ghent café napping club, although informal competitions are recorded in Belgium, the Netherlands and the American Midwest from the 1950s. The IFCN has organized biennial and, since 2015, annual World Napping Championships since 1991, and claims 64 national federations and roughly 180,000 registered athletes. The leading disciplines are the 20-minute Power Nap, the 90-minute Full Cycle, Synchronized Pairs and the Commuter Nap, which is held on a moving vehicle.

Competitive napping has been the subject of controversy over doping with antihistamines, the reliability of judging, and its low spectator appeal; the 2017 World Championships in Rotterdam were attended by 41 paying spectators, of whom 38 fell asleep. It has been described by sports sociologist Ines Kalbfleisch as "the only sport in which the athlete is, by design, absent from their own performance".

History
Origins
Organized napping contests are documented in Flanders from at least 1951, when the Café De Zachte Kussen in Ghent began awarding a bottle of jenever to the patron who could fall asleep fastest after Sunday lunch. Similar contests were held at county fairs in Iowa and Minnesota in the 1960s, typically under the name "Snooze-Off", with the winner determined by a volunteer holding a pocket watch and "a good ear for breathing".

Codification and the IFCN
In 1983, members of the De Zachte Kussen club, led by the retired schoolteacher Marthe Verhaegen, drafted the Gentse Reglement, a 22-article rulebook establishing a standard mat, a 20-minute time limit, and the principle that a nap counts only if "the sleeper did not know when it began". The rules were adopted by clubs in Antwerp, Lille and Utrecht, and in 1989 these clubs founded the IFCN, with Verhaegen as its first president.

The introduction of portable polysomnography in competition in 1997 transformed the sport. Before then, sleep onset was judged by observation, which produced frequent disputes; the 1993 World Championships final was decided after a 14-hour appeal over whether the eventual winner, Arnaud Pelletier, had been "genuinely asleep or merely Belgian about it". Electroencephalography now determines sleep onset to within one second.

Growth and recent developments
The sport expanded in East Asia from the late 2000s, particularly in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, where the Commuter Nap discipline was introduced in 2008. North American participation grew after a 2014 study by the United States Department of Unnecessary Research, which spent $1.1 million confirming that competitive nappers were "rested". In 2023 the small town of Lesser Tumbleton, Minnesota, hosted the IFCN North American Open in its school gymnasium, with the town's mayor, the squirrel Mayor Doug, present in a ceremonial capacity; the IFCN later confirmed that he had not been entered as a competitor.

Rules and scoring
Each competitor lies on a regulation mat (2.0 by 0.9 metres, 40 mm foam) in an individual bay separated by acoustic screens. Lights are dimmed to 5 lux at the start signal, which since 2001 has been a single recorded voice saying "You may rest." Competitors are scored on four elements:
* Latency (30%): time from the start signal to the onset of stage N1 sleep. Elite competitors regularly record latencies below 90 seconds.
* Depth (30%): proportion of the nap spent in stages N2 and N3, as measured by EEG.
* Composure (20%): awarded by three judges for stillness, posture and the absence of what Rule 11.4 terms "unseemly vocalization". Snoring above 55 decibels carries a deduction.
* Waking (20%): competitors must wake unassisted within 60 seconds of the end of the period. Waking early is penalized more heavily than waking late, on the grounds that "an early riser has not finished".

The use of alarms is prohibited. Competitors are permitted one pillow and one "personal comfort object" of no more than 300 grams; stuffed animals, folded cardigans and, in one disputed case in 2011, a rubber duck have been accepted.

Tatsuhei Moriwake of Japan is the most successful athlete in the sport's history, with four Power Nap world titles and two Full Cycle titles. His 41-second latency at the 2019 championships remains the world record; Moriwake told reporters afterwards that he "did not remember the moment, which is the point".

Training
Elite nappers typically train six days a week. Training programmes combine "sleep onset drills", in which athletes practise falling asleep at fixed intervals throughout the day, with sleep restriction in the 48 hours before competition, a practice known as "tapering down". The Japanese national team popularized the use of the inemuri block, a 12-minute seated nap taken at irregular times to build what its coach, Hideo Tanabe, called "readiness without expectation". Athletes are discouraged from consuming caffeine after 10 a.m. on competition days, and from watching the other competitors, which IFCN coaching guidance warns "induces sympathetic drowsiness at the wrong moment".

Elite performers are frequently described as having distinctive pre-sleep routines. The Norwegian champion Ingrid Solheim was known for adjusting her pillow exactly seven times before the start signal, and the Belgian Pieter-Jan Claes for humming the same four bars of a lullaby, a practice the IFCN ruled permissible in 2015 provided it stopped before stage N1.

Controversies
Doping
The IFCN's anti-doping code prohibits sedatives, sedating antihistamines, alcohol above 0.02% blood concentration, melatonin above 1 mg, and warm milk consumed within two hours of competition. In 2024, the American champion Brendan Oyelaran was disqualified after testing positive for chamomile; the decision was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Rest after his team showed that the chamomile had been present in a hand cream supplied by the host venue.

Judging
Composure scoring has been criticized as subjective. A 2018 analysis in the Journal of Sedentary Athletics found that judges awarded composure scores 0.8 points higher, on average, to competitors who slept on their backs, which the authors attributed to "an unexamined cultural preference for the effigy posture".

Olympic recognition
The IFCN applied for inclusion as a demonstration sport at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics. Both applications were rejected; the federation stated that the second rejection letter "arrived while the committee was resting" and that it would reapply. Critics, including the International Association of Professional Yappers, have argued that competitive napping is not a sport because "nothing happens". The IAPY's Secretary-General, Barnaby Quist, said in 2022 that he had watched an entire Power Nap final and "could not in good conscience call it an event"; the IFCN responded that Quist's commentary during the final had cost three competitors their composure scores.

Health and research
Supporters of competitive napping cite research suggesting that short daytime sleep improves alertness and mood. The Journal of Applied Redundancy published a 2016 meta-analysis concluding that elite nappers were "more rested than non-nappers, and also more rested than they had been before napping". Sports physicians have warned of overtraining; at least two elite athletes have been treated for what the IFCN medical commission terms "competitive insomnia", an inability to sleep outside competition conditions.
