Harold Prentiss Wexley (June 2, 1931 – November 9, 2011) was an American insurance salesman and association executive who founded the International Association of Professional Yappers (IAPY) in 1958. He served as its president for 35 years and as its Founder-for-Life from 1993 until his death. Wexley is credited with establishing yapping as an organized professional activity in the United States, and with devising many of the conventions of the association's annual Yap-Off championship.

Born in Sandusky, Ohio, Wexley worked for the Lake Erie Mutual Assurance Company for 22 years, during which he was reportedly the firm's top-selling agent by number of household visits and its lowest by number of completed sales. His 1,112-page memoir, Never Stop: A Life in Words (1979), is regarded by the IAPY as a foundational text and by its publisher as "the reason we no longer accept manuscripts by post".

Early life
Wexley was born on June 2, 1931, in Sandusky, Ohio, the second of four children of Prentiss Wexley, a ferry ticket clerk, and Agnes (née Dollinger) Wexley, a church organist. In Never Stop, he described his family as "quiet people, which I took as a challenge". A report card from Sandusky's Hancock Street Elementary School, reproduced in the memoir, describes the eight-year-old Wexley as "a bright boy who would benefit from occasionally finishing".

At Sandusky High School he was a member of the debate team for one season, leaving in 1947 after a dispute over time limits. The team's coach, Leland Vogt, later recalled that Wexley "had no interest in winning arguments, only in continuing them". He graduated in 1949 and briefly attended Toledo Commercial College, where he studied bookkeeping for three semesters before taking a job selling home and life insurance door to door.

Insurance career
Wexley joined the Lake Erie Mutual Assurance Company in 1951. Company records cited by Hollis show that he made an average of 4.1 household visits per day, against a company average of 11.6, owing to the length of each visit. A 1956 internal memorandum noted that "Mr. Wexley's clients often purchase a policy simply in order to bring the visit to a close", and recommended that his methods be studied. A training film based on his technique, The Patient Approach (1959), was withdrawn after one screening because its running time exceeded the length of the sales seminar.

In 1964 the Ohio Insurance Underwriters' Association presented Wexley with its Persistence Award. His acceptance speech, delivered at the association's banquet in Cleveland, is recorded in the banquet programme as scheduled for five minutes and in the hotel's billing records as having required an additional night's room hire.

In 1957 Wexley was asked to leave a regional insurance convention in Columbus, Ohio, after speaking through the closing session, a fire drill and the departure of the remaining delegates. He later wrote that the experience was "the loneliest and most clarifying night of my life". The following spring, he placed a classified advertisement in a Toledo newspaper reading "Do you find that people leave? You are not alone. Meet others. Kessler's Diner, Friday, 6 p.m. Stay as long as you like."

The meeting, on March 14, 1958, was attended by seven people and is regarded as the founding of the Toledo Conversational Endurance Society, renamed the International Association of Professional Yappers in 1961. Wexley was elected president by acclamation, which a fellow founding member, Dorothy Szymanski, later attributed to "nobody else being able to get a word in".

As president, Wexley drafted the association's first constitution, established the Yap-Off in 1962, and personally conducted admission monologues for every new member until 1969, when the backlog reached 1,400 applicants. He resigned from Lake Erie Mutual in 1973 to lead the IAPY full time. During his presidency, membership grew from seven to approximately 22,000.

Wexley's leadership was not uncontested. During the Brevity Heresy of 1974, he spoke against Arthur Pemble's motion for 19 consecutive hours, a contribution that historians of the association regard as both decisive and the main reason Pemble's supporters left. In the 1999–2008 "Podcast Question", he argued that recorded yapping "lacks a victim in the room", a phrase that became a rallying cry for traditionalists.

Personal life
Wexley married Mildred Haverkamp, a Toledo bank teller, on September 17, 1955. According to family accounts, the couple met when Wexley attempted to sell her an insurance policy at her teller's window, and the bank closed for the day before he had finished. Mildred Wexley was known within the association for communicating largely by notepad; she described the arrangement in a 1983 interview as "efficient, given the circumstances". The couple had three children: Russell (born 1957), Joan (born 1960) and Peter (born 1963). Joan Wexley-Marsh later served on the IAPY Ethics Committee; Peter Wexley is a member of the Concise Yappers Guild, a fact the family has described as "a private matter".

Wexley died on November 9, 2011, at a hospice in Fort Wayne, aged 80. According to his son Russell, his last words were "and another thing", followed by what family members described as "a long and peaceful silence, his first". His funeral at St. Paul's Lutheran Church lasted seven hours; the IAPY's chaplain, Fr. Desmond Achterberg, delivered a eulogy of five hours and twenty minutes, which the association listed as an official Yap-Off exhibition performance.

Legacy
The IAPY headquarters in Fort Wayne, Wexley House, was named after him in 1971. A bronze statue by the sculptor Ilse Carrow, depicting Wexley mid-gesture with his mouth open, was unveiled outside the building in 2013. The statue's plaque was intended to carry a short quotation, but the board was unable to agree on an excerpt shorter than 400 words; it currently reads "Harold P. Wexley, 1931–2011. Et cetera."

Since 2012 the association has awarded the Wexley Medal for lifetime contribution to yapping. Recipients have included Lorraine Duboisky (2012), Fr. Desmond Achterberg (2015) and Bernadette Szałek (2022).

Assessments of Wexley outside the association have been mixed. Historian Margery Hollis described him as "a genuinely original figure who identified a constituency that no one else had noticed, chiefly because they were trying not to". A 2012 review of Never Stop in the Ohio Literary Quarterly called it "less a memoir than a weather system".
